Since the first acquisition of a da Vinci robot at Geneva University Hospital in February 2006, the Division of Urologic Surgery has rapidly developped its robotic activity by initiating a program mainly devoted to radical prostatectomy, pyeloplasty and ureteral reimplantation. Since 2009, the operative spectrum has been broadened to partial nephrectomy.

In order to promptly reach success and efficiency, 2 partnerships have been concluded : one with Prof. T. Ahlering (University of California, Irvine, USA) and Prof J Hubert (Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Nancy, France). Close contacts with Prof V Patel (Robotic Center, Orlando, Florida, USA) have also been established, including visits in Orlando. This has led to quick standardisation of the procedures, and hence garanty their efficacy.

In 2008, Geneva University Hospital has upgraded its da Vinci robot with the acquisition of the 4S-High Definition version. In 2010, a second robot has been aquired: the 4SI-High Definition version, which is the latest upgrade.

As yet (March 22, 2011), over 350 urological operations have been performed in our Division with the Da Vinci robot, namely over 280 radical prostatectomies, 42 pyeloplasties, 16 procedures on the ureter, so as 15 partial ablations of the kidney. The majority of these surgeries have been performed by the head of the Robotic Urology Division, in order to rapidly obtain optimal results. The efficiency of these techniques have been reported at the Congress of the Swiss Society of Urology in 2007 and 2008, and some are pending in future 2011 meetings.
